The Broyles Community Center
Whether you plan to attend the Tour of Homes or not, you’ll want to mark your calendars for April 30 and May 1 when, once again, the Tour of Homes Marketplace comes to Big Canoe. The abundance of vendors and artists will surely inspire you!
The Broyles Center and adjacent parking lot and patio will be transformed into a bustling marketplace with an amazing array of vendors and artists offering jewelry, clothing, artwork, gift items, food and more. The Marketplace also hosts the Bear Paw Bakery, the Crazy Bear Café and the always popular Book Nook and Collectors’ Corner.
This is a great opportunity to support local businesses without leaving the gates of Big Canoe and to see a diverse group of artists from Big Canoe and around the Southeast. You’ll find perennial favorites as well as many new offerings. A full list of vendors and artists is provided below.
Inside the main level of the Broyles Center the Vendors Market will be on display. In the parking area across from the Broyles Center the outdoor Artists Market will be waiting. And on the lowest level of the Broyles Center, Big Canoe Artists will greet you.
With so many wonderful vendors and artists to choose from, it will be hard to decide where to begin…and when to stop. And remember, it’s never too early to shop for Christmas or the next anniversary and birthday. Since every purchase helps support charities in Pickens and Dawson counties, come early, stay late, and be there both days!
Something Inspiring for Everyone

By Lynn Brazen The Tour of Homes Marketplace is always a favorite of Tour goers. Those who are new to the Tour will want to plan plenty of time to visit the simply inspiring vendors and artists who will be here April 30—May 1.
The location of visiting artists will be different this year. Tour buses will open their doors into the artist venue in the parking lot directly across from the Broyles Center. Everyone will be able to take full advantage of all the wonderful artwork being exhibited and then move easily to the Broyles Center to visit vendors selling jewelry, crafts, décor items and clothes.
The Big Canoe Artists Group once again will be in the large room on the lowest level of the Broyles Center. This location worked very well last year, enabling them to showcase more artists than in previous years. Be sure to stop in to see the work of your friends and neighbors.
Many vendors and artists return year after year, but there will be new ones this year as well. The sheer diversity of exciting items is always amazing.
Nearly two dozen vendors and artists have already signed up, including many Big Canoe favorites.

Laura Smith of LG Designs will be here with her beautiful, original jewelry designs. Laura says she loves making affordable and unique pieces that “make a statement.” She uses semi-precious stones, pearls and crystals she collects from travels around the world to create eye-catching pieces. She has quite a following in Big Canoe.
Carolina Perez of Isea Designs loves coming to Big Canoe and has been here many times, not only for the Tour Marketplace, but also Oktoberfest and this year for the Christmas show at the Sconti. Carolina’s unique jewelry incorporates a variety of materials to create jewelry that is classic yet bold and contemporary.
Nancy Bickley will be here with Coe Steinwart. Nancy does beautiful hand painted tiles and this year has collaborated with Coe to create hand painted, hand stitched children’s quilts. Coe also will have a collection of her home and garden products and her illustrated children’s book Elf on a Shelf, which has sold more than a million copies.
Margaret Hopkins of Earth ‘N Vine will have her popular fantail willow wreaths, college mascot “tears” made of birch bark, dried floral arrangements, and cute pocket-shaped tins with hydrangeas.
Deborah Johnson of Alpaca Traditions will be returning with her gorgeous scarves, wraps, sweaters and coats. Big Canoe shoppers look forward to her designs every year.
Terrie Allen of Terrie Allen Originals also has been at the Marketplace many times. She is an eclectic jewelry artist whose pieces cover a broad spectrum of styles, from beadwork to wirework and everything in between. Some of her favorite materials to work with are copper, fabric, enamel, leather, polymer clay, wood, and gemstones, all of which result in stunning jewelry accessories.
Artists Ted Cooper, a resident of Big Canoe and well-known wildlife photographer, will be returning. He does beautiful nature and wildlife photos and will also have photos printed onto canvas in handmade frames. One Big Canoe resident gave some of Ted’s work as a Christmas gift to friends in Vermont, who were amazed to discover they had a photograph of his they bought in Bonita Springs, FL many years ago.
Alan Young, a very prominent wildlife artist, also will be returning. Since Alan began exhibiting in 1998, he has won numerous Fine Art awards, with his works in public and private collections from the United States to Europe. He is now considered one of the top wildbird artists in the Southeast.
Greg Johnson, a well-known North Georgia potter, insists that pottery gives more pleasure when it is used frequently, since it appeals to the touch as well as sight. His beautiful, hand-thrown stoneware is very functional, yet has an elegant, refined look. The handmade glazes he uses are food safe and have a smooth surface that cleans like a non-stick surface.
Shelly Dancy, owner of the Naked Soap Company, will offer beautiful handmade soaps.
William Dealy, a resident of Bent Tree and owner of Kawonu Crafts Ltd., will be a new exhibitor this year. He creates handcrafted replicas of solid wood duck decoys and shorebird stick-ups, which were common in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Each decoy’s head and body is turned on a reproduction lathe. The rough bird is then sculptured and fashioned using hand carving and texturing tools, and then painted and finished to replicate a weathered piece. These distinctive birds are unique examples of Southern Appalachian and Coastal art.
Visit Early for the Best Section Those who arrive early with cash and checkbooks in hand (some vendors and artists do not accept credit cards) will find the best selection. But there will be plenty of inspiring artwork, home decorating items, and gifts to choose from on both days.
