On April 30 and May 1, 2010, book lovers will once again converge on the Tour of Homes Book Nook. Where else can you fill a shopping bag with best-selling fiction and nonfiction books at the bargain price of $2 for hardbacks and $1 for paperbacks?

With nonfiction books organized by category—history, cooking, gardening, etc.—and fiction alphabetized by author, finding all the right books will be easy.

But just how will all those books get there? The process started in early August, 2009 when Cathy Smith, Book Nook co-chair, got the first donation of books—left on her front porch by a Big Canoe neighbor. Cathy began sorting and alphabetizing. In October when collection boxes were put out, Cathy’s workload increased. By February, it will be difficult to see the furniture in Cathy’s house. Why has she done this year after year for the last nine years?

“I enjoy the books and the people,” Cathy said. “I have made many friendships while doing this and I like finding that special book someone needs or wants.”

This year Cathy recruited one of her Book Nook volunteers, Glenda Molton, as co-chair to assist with publicity, volunteer recruitment and scheduling. Glenda agreed to take on the responsibility and said she did it “simply because I love books and love to read, and because opening a box of donated books is like opening a Christmas present!”

On the Sunday and Monday before the Tour, books will be moved to the Book Nook location in the Broyles Center. There a cadre of volunteers will spend the week arranging the books for sale. To join this special group of book-loving volunteers, contact Glenda at (706) 268-1595.

The Tour of Homes Book Nook is one of the most popular stops at the Marketplace! Thousands of donated books are up for sale, sorted carefully so you don’t have to wade elbow deep through boxes to find your literary treasures. Book Nook boasts everything from colorful cocktail table books to paperbacks, cookbooks to how-to-fix anything books, poetry readings to rock ‘n roll tapes. Books are well priced at $1 for paperbacks and $2 for hard covers.

What about books not sold during the Tour?
All books left on the shelves late Saturday afternoon, May 1, will be sorted for donation to the Pickens and Dawson County Libraries, Habitat for Humanity, Joy House, Bear Cottage, Dream House for Medically Fragile Children, the Veterans Administraton Hospital, active military in Afghanistan, Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center, Jasper Community Thrift Store, Pickens Animal Rescue, an inner-city school program in Washington, D.C., a local assisted living home, and the Chapel library. Charity abounds! If you’re looking for a Bible, best go to Gideon. All Bibles are given to local missions to spread the Word around the world.

For What It’s Worth
By Jim Owens

If you have attended the annual Tour of Homes extravaganza sponsored by the Big Canoe Women’s Guild the Book Nook operation will probably not be news to you. For those who somehow have not experienced the sheer joy of browsing a second-hand book store, please do so at your earliest opportunity. In the meanwhile this article hopefully will heighten your anticipation. The Book Nook wares are on display on the ground floor of the Broyles Center of the Big Canoe Chapel on the Friday and Saturday of the Tour. (The dates of the 2009 Tour are May 1 and 2.)
